South Penghu Marine National Park can become the resource center of the marine species in the north sea area of Penghu. The fish and invertebrate larvae can dispersal to the north if the conservation was properly implemented. This may bring a positive impact to the sustainable management of ecological resources in sea water of Penghu or even Taiwan. Since has established, South Penghu Marine National Park facing a huge pressure of recreation, not only the snorkeling and scuba diving, there were continuous stream of visitors with yachts went to the Blowhole in Xijiyu. With the establishment of national parks and improvement of the infrastructure, the number of tourists for the recreation activities in the four south islands areas only increase. So, we need to complete the data collection of the existing marine ecological resources before the tourists influx into the national park. In our study, we executed the basic marine ecological investigation, to understand the status of resources currently and try to establish a basic information based on a long-term monitoring. The result of this survey could be the fundamental information for the planning of the ecological conservation and environmental resource use in the future.
The methods and process of the research
In our study, 48 sampling sites were investigated by scuba diving, to sample the community structure of coral, fishes, marine benthic macroinvertebrates. We also conducted a
survey for composition of mollusks of intertidal in four major islets.
The important results
1.Recording 44 families and 302 species of fishes which Dongjiyu has highest number with 207 species, and lowest 118 species in Tiezhen.
2.Recording 19 families and 161 species of coral, including 12 families, 37 genera, and 134 species of Scleractinia, 5 families, 13 genera, and 25 species of Octrocoral, and 2 family, 2 genus, and 2 species of Hydrocoral. The coverage of hard coral species was between 5% to 76%.
3.Recording 9 phyla and 145 species of benthic macroinvertebrates, which mollusks has highest number of species with 89 species.
4.The sampling site with the highest number of species was B-3 in Dongyupingyu, recording 45 species; the lowest number of species were B-8 in Dongyupingyu, C-5 in Dongjiyu, G-1 in Toujin, recording 15 species.
Major recommendations
1.Establish 25 long-term monitor stations: Xiyupingyu and Tiezhen with A-4, A-6, A-8, F-2 and F-3; Dongyupingyu with B-2, B-3, B-4 ,B-7 and B-8; Dongjiyu and Chutouyu with C-2, C-4, C-6, C-8, E-1, E-3 and E-4; Xijiyu with D-2, D-5, D-6 and D-7; Zhangzai with H-1, H-2 and H-3; Toujin with G-4.
2.Maintain the long-term investigation of this 25 station, and increase a 20 meter depth investigation in at least 5 station, to increase the information of depth gradient.
3.The fishing behavior in the surrounding area should be validly managed, in order to preserve the integrity of coral reef ecosystem.
4.Establish a small core conservation area after the long-term investigation in our 25 stations, in order to maintain the sustainable ecological development in South Penghu Marine National Park.
