  • Soft corals: Corals are animals, not plants. Fleshy and thick in texture, soft corals also secrete calcium carbonate skeletons; however, these are in the form of tiny, discontinuous calcareous spicules embedded within their tissues to support the colony. Therefore, they feel soft to the touch.
  • Stony corals: As the name suggests, they look like stones and feel much harder. They are also known as “reef-building corals.” Stony corals possess rigid calcareous skeletons and continuously grow by depositing calcium carbonate. The primary structural component of large coral reefs is formed by stony corals.
