On October 4, 2013, the Marine National Park Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as MNPH) celebrated its 6th anniversary at the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park Visitor Center. In addition to showcasing six years of conservation and restoration achievements, the event included an award ceremony for the Secondary Visual Identity Logo Design Competition and the signing of a cooperation agreement with the National Taiwan Museum (NTM), establishing a new partnership to advance marine environmental education initiatives.
Distinguished guests and members of the public participated enthusiastically. Attendees included Ms. Lin Ling, Senior Technical Specialist of the National Park Division, Construction and Planning Agency, Ministry of the Interior; Professor Sung Ke-yi of the Dongsha International Marine Research Station; Director Chen Chi-min of the National Taiwan Museum; Dean Chen Hung-yuan of the College of Marine Sciences, National Sun Yat-sen University; Deputy Director Hsu Ching-chih of the Southern Coastal Patrol Office, Coast Guard Administration; and Director Cheng Ming-yuan of the Penghu County Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau. Together with MNPH Director Yang Mo-lin and volunteer representatives, they celebrated by cutting a commemorative cake. Guests extended congratulations and expressed hopes for the early establishment of the Penghu Southern Four Islands Marine National Park to further advance marine conservation efforts.
MNPH has long been committed to promoting environmental education. In addition to organizing annual marine national park exhibitions and lectures, it launched a campus outreach tour program in 2009, focusing on elementary schools in Kaohsiung. Over the past two years, annual participation has exceeded 8,000 students. MNPH has also published 30 books and produced seven audiovisual works. Among them, Secret Realm of Lanyu, Diving into Lanyu Sea: Flying into the Tao Forest, and Ancient Stones · Terns · Coral Sea: Western-Style Houses · Lighthouses · Basalt received honors at the 1st Green Bud Award for Outstanding Environmental Education Publications. The documentary Crossing the Kuroshio: Visiting Taiwan won the Gold Award in the Culture category at the 46th Houston International Film Festival. These achievements serve as strong encouragement for MNPH’s environmental education endeavors. To further expand and deepen marine environmental education efforts, MNPH signed a cooperation agreement with the National Taiwan Museum—Taiwan’s oldest museum with extensive curatorial experience—during the anniversary celebration. Future collaboration will include thematic exhibitions on marine national parks, marine conservation lectures, research cooperation, and related publications to jointly promote environmental education.
The event also featured the award ceremony for the Secondary Visual Identity Logo Design Competition. The competition aimed to introduce marine conservation concepts through aesthetics, encouraging participants to explore the interdependence between marine organisms and their environments during the creative process. Public participation was enthusiastic, with 598 submissions across two themes: Marine National Park Headquarters and Dongsha Atoll National Park. A panel of judges selected three winners and three honorable mentions in each category. Awards were presented by Director Yang Mo-lin and Assistant Professor Chen Yueh-ying of the Department of Visual Communication Design at Shu-Te University. Professor Chen also provided professional commentary on the winning works. Award recipients included professional designers as well as students from diverse backgrounds, successfully fulfilling MNPH’s objective of promoting marine environmental protection and sustainable resource values.
Through years of dedicated effort, ecological conservation and restoration work in Dongsha Atoll National Park has yielded continuous progress and visible results. Moving forward, MNPH aims to establish an international marine research station to provide even stronger protection for Dongsha’s marine ecosystem and to facilitate international academic exchange. In addition, MNPH continues to advocate for the establishment of the Penghu Southern Four Islands as a national park, ensuring the preservation of marine ecology and cultural heritage while supporting sustainable local industries. By strengthening environmental education outreach, MNPH seeks to share conservation achievements with a broader audience and inspire collective action in safeguarding marine ecosystems.
