The South Penghu Marine National Park Plan was officially announced and implemented today. To welcome this new member into the ranks of marine conservation and in conjunction with World Oceans Day, the Marine National Park Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as MNPH), in collaboration with the Penghu County Government Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau, held a new book launch and lecture at 10:00 a.m. today (June 8) at the auditorium of the Penghu County Cultural Affairs Bureau. The event introduced two new publications: A Geological Journey through the South Penghu Four Islands and Diving into the South Penghu Four Islands.
Penghu County Magistrate Wang Chien-fa, Speaker Liu Chen Chao-ling, and several county council members attended the launch event. Magistrate Wang stated that Penghu is a precious treasure. Because the county did not consent to the storage of nuclear waste here and instead designated basalt preservation areas, there is now the opportunity to establish the South Penghu Four Islands as a national park. National parks preserve enduring resources for future generations. Speaker Liu Chen also remarked that the two newly published books will help the public better understand the marine culture and geological features of the South Penghu Four Islands, and expressed hope that MNPH will continue to publish related works so that more people may come to know South Penghu Marine National Park.
In his remarks, Director Yang Mo-lin of MNPH stated that the South Penghu Marine National Park was approved by the Executive Yuan in March this year and officially implemented by the Ministry of the Interior on World Oceans Day, carrying profound significance. National parks represent a universal language, symbolizing a nation’s most outstanding natural environments and cultural heritage. As the newest member, the South Penghu Four Islands benefited greatly from the guidance and cooperation of the Penghu County Government, County Council, local residents, NGOs, and academic experts throughout the planning process. Future management will adhere to principles of low-impact development and sustainable operation.
A highlight of the event was the participation of Professors Chiu Yu-wen and Chen Wen-shan, who led engaging introductions to the two new books. Through lively presentations, they conveyed the importance of natural resources and marine conservation, offering valuable guidance for parents on shared reading with their children. After the lecture, the authors signed books and interacted closely with attendees, leaving participants with a sense of fulfillment and reinforcing the concept of marine ecological conservation.
