The marine ecological resources of Green Island are exceptionally rich, making it one of the world’s 101 renowned diving destinations. International divers frequently travel here specifically to admire its abundant marine life. Within Nanliao Harbor, dazzling and colorful coral reef fish can be seen swimming gracefully, and divers may even encounter the famous “star of the sea” — the pygmy seahorse. However, 80% of marine debris originates from land-based sources. Coupled with the increasingly concentrated and intense rainfall patterns brought about by global climate change, more waste and pollutants are being washed into the ocean, further exacerbating impacts on the marine environment.
Following the conclusion of Green Island’s peak summer tourist season, the Marine National Park Headquarters organized the 2010 Green Island “International Coastal Cleanup Day” underwater cleanup event on September 30 at Zhongliao Fishing Harbor and Gongguan Fishing Harbor. The event was co-organized by the Green Island Cultural Tourism and Ecological Development Association of Taitung County and I-Shou University, with participation from local associations, community divers, and members of the public. It was also promoted in conjunction with the Taitung County Government’s “Protect Green Island, Embrace the Ocean” eco-travel initiative. Tseng Hsin-mei, recipient of the 2010 Golden Melody Award for Best Taiwanese Female Singer, enthusiastically joined the event. Through this activity, organizers hope to encourage the public to care for our precious marine resources and ensure that Green Island’s beautiful underwater world remains a source of pride for Taiwan.
The event attracted 60 divers. Although underwater cleanup is far more challenging than land-based cleanup, participants still collected nearly 30 bags of marine debris. The Headquarters stated that similar marine cleanup activities will continue to be held at various locations in the future, aiming to gradually integrate marine conservation awareness and action into the daily lives of local residents. Together, we can safeguard Taiwan’s beautiful oceans and fulfill our responsibility as global citizens.
