A beach cleanup activity was held on the afternoon of June 8 under the command of Commander Lin Yu-shan of the Dongsha Patrol Command. The event mobilized all available personnel on the island, including staff from the Dongsha Management Station of the Marine National Park Headquarters, officers and soldiers of the Patrol Command, members of the Navy and Air Force stationed on the island, and medical officers from Dongguang Hospital—totaling 75 participants. In addition, five researchers currently conducting academic studies on the island took part, including Senior Specialist Hsiao Tse-min from the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, diving instructor Kuo Tao-jen, and researchers from National Taiwan Ocean University and National Chung Hsing University’s Department of Life Sciences. Altogether, approximately 1,800 kilograms of waste were collected.
Statistical records from the cleanup revealed that the most common types of debris were Styrofoam, plastic bottles, glass bottles, and fishing buoys. Recyclable waste was transported back to Taiwan by ship and entrusted to a professional cleaning company for proper disposal by the Patrol Command.
This activity aimed to promote the significance of World Oceans Day. Through hands-on participation, attendees were encouraged to confront the crisis of marine and coastal pollution, reflect on the causes of marine debris, and work together to protect and cherish the ocean.
