The ocean is the heart of the Earth and the cradle of life, rich in biological resources. It plays an irreplaceable role in climate regulation and ecological cycles. Every year on June 8, World Oceans Day is celebrated around the world with various activities inviting ocean lovers to get closer to and learn more about the sea. Through the collective power of the public, greater attention is drawn to marine issues, and through action, we work together to protect the ocean.

In response to World Oceans Day and to promote marine protection, Dongsha Atoll National Park mobilized 73 personnel from our office, the Dongsha Coast Patrol Command, the Air Force Dongsha Detachment, the Navy Meteorological Station, Dongguang Hospital, and other stationed units to jointly conduct a beach cleanup activity. After assembling and grouping, participants worked for more than two hours, cleaning approximately 600 meters of coastline and collecting a total of 1,257 kilograms of waste. Most of the debris originated from mainland China and Southeast Asian countries, with Styrofoam, foam materials, and plastic PET bottles accounting for the majority. Recyclable waste was transported back to Taiwan by the command for proper processing.

Marine debris not only damages the ecological landscape and pollutes the environment, but because it does not naturally decompose over time, it can also be mistakenly ingested by marine animals and birds. Some may even become entangled in waste, unable to breathe or feed, ultimately leading to death and causing severe impacts on marine ecosystems. Through this activity, we hope participants can personally experience the seriousness of marine debris pollution, strengthen their environmental awareness, and put marine environmental protection goals into practice. We also hope that more people will join us in protecting the ocean and participating in marine-friendly initiatives.
