In response to Earth Day, nearly a hundred people from various units stationed on the Dongsha Island, including Dongsha Management Station under the Marine National Park Headquarters (MNPHQ), Dongsha Command Post, Air Force Dongsha Division, Naval Meteorological Station, and Dongguang Hospital, were mobilized to participate in the beach cleanup on the 19th, with everyone helping to pick up litter under the hot sun and doing their share to help the global environment. After two hours of cleaning up, more than 2,200 kilograms of waste was cleared from the east coast of Dongsha Island, with polystyrene, plastic bottles, and fishing gear making up the majority of the litter and the source of the waste mainly from China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asian countries. The MNPHQ said that coastal waste not only impacts on the view of the landscape, but also threatens the survival of wildlife. For example, video footages of vets removing drinking straws inhaled by turtles or the dissection of dead seabirds with plastic debris in their stomachs were both haunting and horrifying. Finally, the MNPHQ emphasized that the department is demonstrating its determination to protect the environment through practical actions by organizing beach cleanup activities in Dongsha in response to Earth Day, as well as by actual participation in the cleanup. The MNPHQ would like to let people understand the seriousness of drifting marine garbage, so as to strengthen the concept of conservation and achieve the objective of environmental protection. We hope that more people would pay attention to the issue of marine ecosystem conservation and join our ranks. Especially now during the pandemic prevention period, let's contribute to Taiwan's  pandemic prevention efforts and protect the earth together with Taiwan.
