The Marine National Park Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as the Headquarters), in collaboration with the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park Administration of the Construction and Planning Agency, Ministry of the Interior, jointly organized the “Biodiversity Conservation Achievement Presentation.” The event was successfully concluded on April 28, 2010, with the attendance of distinguished guests from related agencies, scholars and experts, as well as individuals and volunteers concerned with marine national parks and marine ecological conservation.
The Headquarters stated that Dongsha Atoll National Park possesses a rich coral reef ecosystem. However, due to abnormal global sea temperature increases in 1998, widespread coral bleaching occurred within the atoll. As a result, conservation and coral reef restoration have become the primary objectives of Dongsha Atoll National Park. To help the public better understand conservation achievements, the Headquarters presented the results of two major research projects conducted in 2009: “Investigation and Analysis of Coral Assemblages and Restoration Strategies in Dongsha Atoll” and “Long-term Monitoring of the Marine Environment in Dongsha Atoll National Park.” The two project leaders delivered keynote presentations featuring diverse and informative content, attracting a full audience.
The concluding panel discussion was moderated by Director Yang Mo-lin, with Professor Sung Kuo-yi and Associate Professor Wang Yu-huai from National Sun Yat-sen University participating as panelists. Attendees actively offered valuable suggestions, and experts provided professional recommendations regarding marine ecological research and the management of marine national parks. After enthusiastic discussions, the achievement presentation concluded successfully.
The Headquarters noted that the conclusions and recommendations reached during the presentation will serve as references for future coral reef ecosystem monitoring, surveys, and restoration assessments in Dongsha Atoll National Park. In addition, strengthening marine ecological conservation efforts and continuing to prioritize the establishment of marine-type national parks remain key goals, with the long-term objective of increasing marine protected areas to 12% of Taiwan’s territorial waters, thereby enhancing the protection of marine resources.
