The Penghu South Four Islands are rich in marine and terrestrial biological resources, feature distinctive volcanic basalt landscapes, and preserve Penghu’s traditional architecture, settlements, and cultural heritage. The Marine National Park Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as the Headquarters) has assessed that the area possesses the necessary qualities to become a national park and holds strong potential for ecotourism development. Therefore, from August 23 to 25, the Headquarters, in collaboration with the Penghu County Government and the Penghu Family Support Center of the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (hereinafter referred to as the Family Support Center), jointly organized the “Penghu South Four Islands Ecological Experience Camp.” After an opening ceremony on August 23 officiated by Deputy Director Lin Ling of the Headquarters and Director Cheng Ming-yuan of the Penghu County Government Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau, 20 elementary school students from disadvantaged families in Penghu, accompanied by instructors, departed from Magong aboard the vessel Guang Zheng No. 8 to Dongyuping Islet to begin a series of ecological activities. The camp concluded successfully with participants returning to Magong via Wang’an on the vessel Nanhai Star.
The Headquarters arranged a variety of enriching cultural and natural courses and hands-on activities, including “Encountering the Penghu South Four Islands,” “Intertidal Ecological Experience,” “Exploring the Summer Night Sky,” “Guided Tour of Traditional Settlements,” and “Green Sea Turtle Ecology Interpretation.” Through these immersive experiences, participants gained an understanding of the historical and cultural development of the islands, the uniqueness of their geological landscapes, and the richness and sustainability of their marine ecosystems. By appreciating the beauty of the Penghu South Four Islands, students were guided to recognize the importance of resource conservation and to enhance awareness of sustainable management and shared stewardship.
During the opening ceremony on the 23rd, Deputy Director Lin Ling encouraged participants to learn at least one piece of knowledge in each of five categories during the camp: “rocks,” “marine life,” “things that fly in the sky,” “stars,” and “traditional houses.” During the post-activity review, students shared what they had learned through drawings.
Director Cheng Ming-yuan of the Penghu County Government Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau encouraged students to better understand the significance of the Penghu South Four Islands in terms of both cultural heritage and ecological resources, and to share their experiences with family members, thereby fostering broader awareness of the importance of preserving the islands’ ecological environment and cultural assets sustainably.
The camp concluded with a closing ceremony at the Green Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Center in Wang’an Township. Participants received certificates of completion, collaboratively created a painting representing their vision of the Penghu South Four Islands, and shared reflections. These outcomes will serve as valuable references for the Headquarters in organizing future ecological experience camps for the Penghu South Four Islands.
