Dongsha Atoll National Park: Dongsha Atoll National Park is not yet available for tourism or recreational activities. Currently, the principal objectives are focusing on the conservation and restoration of environmental resources and the development of profound marine academic studies.

Dongsha Atoll is located in the North area of South Sea where between Hong Kong, Taiwan and Luzon Island. The distance between the northeast atoll to Kaohsiung is 240 nautical miles and to Penghu is 230 nautical miles; the north atoll to Shantou is 140 nautical miles; the west atoll to Hong Kong is 170 nautical miles and to Hainan Island is 360 nautical miles; the south atoll to Taiping Island is 640 nautical miles and to Malina is 420 nautical miles. As to the latitude and longitude, Dongsha Atoll is located between 20°35~47'N and 116°42~55'E.


Dongsha Island is located at the West of Dongsha Atoll and is the only island among Dongsha Atoll above the sea level. This island is also located at South of Taiwan Strait, at East it can control Bashi Channel, at West it holds a critical position next to Hainan Island. In addition, Dongsha Island also functions as the gate of ships from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau; hence, it has an excellent geographic location. Currently the administrative affair is subject to Kaohsiung government (substitute).

Dongsha Management Station
In order to improve the working environment and the quality of services and facilities for the staffs in the Dongsha Atoll National Park, we remodeled the original old building in Dongsha Island as the Management Station plus Office Building for personnel who landed on this island and for management and research purposes. The station consists of the following facilities:

  1. Dry laboratory: For academic research, personal study, and long-term monitoring of water temperature and nutrients purposes.
  2. Wet laboratory: Dongsha Island Wildlife Conservation Center (launched in 2012), for coral restoration and transplantation trials, Tridacna spp. restoration trials and sea turtle salvation purposes.
  3. Nursery and domesticated farm: The space for native seeding species cultivation.

Hours: Laboratory and accommodation are available for staff who work in our station, those who work for the commissioned/cooperation/subsidy projects, and approved personnel issued by our station on the island. It is not yet available for public.

 Dongsha Atoll Research Station
“Dongsha Atoll Research Station” is established jointly by the Coast Guard Administration, Executive Yuan, the National Sun Yat-sen University and the Marine National Park Headquarters. By establishing this station, we expect to complete the marine research environment in Dongsha, improve the marine research field in South Sea, attract domestic and foreign research teams, enhance domestic marine conservation results, and use the research results as references for future management.

Services:

  1. Space on the first floor is for physical and chemical ecological surveys (dry and wet laboratories), the second is for accommodation.
  2. Handicapped bathrooms and ramps are available.
  3. “Green Building” Silver Level candidate.
